Art in Bangkok city

Bangkok. Thailand. Chaotic and extremely smoggy, the capital of this Asian state can be defined as a pulsing hart for fashion, design and art of course. Its central location in the region gives artists the possibility to use the capital city as a base for their work, especially for its connections with the international market.

Therefore, the Thai government is trying to push productivity in areas like fashion handicrafts and household decorations, in order to stimulate and increasing the level of creativity in Bangkok and in Thailand too. Many young artists start to travel around the world having the privilege to study in different country where art is already established, discovering what kind of styles and techniques are developing and which are the elements that will define the new trends. Bangkok has many important art galleries, with temporary exhibitions organized regularly and where artists experiment and take the risk in creating art with their humour and their skills.

The influences in the majority of the current art works come from Thai traditional styles and decorations and in many cases the artistic flows of Chinese and Asian art are predominant. Sukontip Ostick is the Founding Director of La Lanta Fine Art, stated it’s quite difficult to identify a single up-and-coming Thai artists. The scene is crowded and her personal list includes Anupong Kachacheewa for his distinctive and surreal paintings, Prapat Jiwarangsan for his one-of-a-kind glass sculptures and Tinnakorn Kasornsuwan for his rural motif etchings.

Since the contemporary art scene in Bangkok has increased tremendously in the last three years, the number of venues and artists start to be significant even if other smaller cities in the world, still have a bigger variety of art and careers to offer. In this evolving panorama, here there are some useful addresses for exploring contemporary art in Bangkok. Enjoy!
