In one of Milan’s remote areas but at the same time one of the most active and dynamic, a new educational and artistic project is catching on.
Starting from middle school, we are use to teach Art History, a theoretical study, which is often sterile. So, why don’t we start from the art itself arriving to knowledge and learning? It’s called Educating through Art the ambitious project created and sponsored by Hangar Bicocca. The plan consists in forming young Arts Tutor that after a number of lessons about contemporary art and its historical relevancies will be able to manage labs and itineraries within the Hangar’s structure and the exhibitions. The aim is the creation of a knowledge and experience laboratory where to develop ideas, projects, researches and studies, in order to expand our cultural operative area. Hangar Bicocca Lab originates not only with an exhibiting purpose, but with an educational and culturally relevant object.
The project involves university and Academy students to form Arts Tutor to work in a sort of internship. The students come form all different universities, so they will face and share different points of view. After a summer period, where they attend lessons learning the basic concepts, they will become the true protagonists of the visits. What they are asked to do is to use a sign, a symbol present in the art works and make it as the point of departure for an innovative and unique learning and educational course.
The presence of different disciplines is the centre of the initiative. The Hangar Bicocca Lab’s aim is to make the Art not the purpose but the medium for learning subjects apparently distant from art. History, Geography, Maths and Physics professors are involved to offer their personal interpretation of an art work with the extent of developing different interdisciplinary paths to face multiple themes and notions.
One of the last exhibitions realized in the complex shows the creativity of Anselm Kiefer. Starting from him and following with the future installations (in October Alfredo Jaar is already scheduled) several scientific and artistic ways will be developed. In this way, the comprehension of an art work, of an artistic current, of a performance, will be temporally and spatially placed, becoming total.
In October will be professors’ turn. They will be invited to meetings and lectures for learning about the educational proposal made by Hangar Bicocca. Educating through Art will definitely open its doors to the schools in November.
Every single step of Educating through Art has been created, studied and realized by Hangar Bicocca’s staff with the contribution of the society Trivioquadrivio, headed by Professor Leonardo Previ.
